The selling of the soul

Greetings,
Where do I begin and when do I stop...guess its gonna be a pretty long ride, thats my life Im commenting about. It seems that we all get to learn somethin new everyday, everyminute of our life...I strongly believe in that. Why? because thats what life is all about. We hate scams, we hate deception and little do we all know that its all a part of a learning process, What one might call hypocrisy another would term change, development or in the words of a musician, the selling of the soul. Thats what I learnt today.
The day started of like any other friday morning, got up "after" prayers, had a small bowl of fruit salad for lunch, lazed around all afternoon watching U-tube,films and music videos. Get a call early evening from a childhood freind from school whom I havent hung with for years, picks me up and head of to another freind from the past. Felt like school all over again, only this time we all had drivers licenses and fast cars. So to make is even more nostalgic we decided to go fishing, yeh of all the things, fishing was the final verdict and I must admit, it was fun talking about all the pranks and corny crap that we'd do back in school all the way to college and then how we all "grew" into practical life. Spoke about teachers, gangs, studies, girlfriends....damn, it felt fucking good. Here I was, standing under the bridge with two buddies whom Ive grown up with, had fights with, had great memories with, Im glad after all these years some kind of secret bond was maintained. Cheers to that. After fishing, we decided to go for a long drive outta the city, where we could get away from civilization, drove all the way across two states to this resort where we had some drinks and dry fruits...Wicked. The whole way there and back was nothing but good ol' memories making us laugh back at time, never thought those times as a kid would pay off so much into the future, how we've all changed, how we've all got priorities and resposibilities. Got home at 4:30 in the morning only to discover some more freind waiting at my place. So after an adieu to my school bumchums, I hung out with some musician pals from Karachi who were in town for a gig or two. Thats where it all began. The beauty of being a Video Jockey and a musician is that you get to learn alot more about your industry compared to other hosts simply because you relate to a musician as a musician and not a tv presenter. They trust you, they confide in you and they treat you like one of their own. Its moments like these that make me proud of my work and what I've become. If it werent for my music skills, I would be just another crappy ghostwriter like the rest of the music critics,vj's and music columnists who dont know jack-shit about music and use their idiotic worthless remarks to gain attention.losers. Anyway, sitting with these two musicians enlightened my in terms of what the people of our country expect, how they want music to be, what they want to sing along and what they want to feel when they here a song...yes, its truly fascinating how the system works. Lets face the fact that our entire media industry is currupt and is probably gonna be that way either forever or for a very very long time..theres nothing the musicians can do about it..its easy to blame their music and their lyrics, but who the fuck are the people to pass these judgements? are we talking about all 169,270,617 people living in Pakistan, no, were just blaming those illeterate ones who're almost 3/4 of that. Harsh thing to say isnt it, but hey making music aint easy, I learnt I gotta sell my soul for all those "abdul aziz's" and "tabassums" just so that they can sing happy songs all their lives, Why again? becuase they've probably got enough shit going on in their own lives that listening to happy songs is the only highlight of their day....damn, its practically one huge circle of corrupted crap-shit. And its because of this circle that music would eventually be a sell out 'funda' for most Paki musicians...dont even get me started on other industries...I always thought why doesnt the govt. do something to make life better for musicians...the answer I got was.."why musicians?its not like everyone else is safe & sound, everyones got issues, everyone is getting screwed, even the guy who sits in a dark alley waiting to mug you"...my country...is this what I have to be proud of..is this the identity I carry all my life..is this what I should get patriotic about...
Ladies and gentlemen...with all due respect, music for me is a universal language, speak it and you shall see more that what meets the vision of your eye. Relate to it and you shall learn more that what you ever did in your years of school and college.
Believe me...
Peace,
Faraz Khan.

i think that its the same everywhere!, i used to think that pakistan is corrupt and all that.. then i discovered indonesia. and belive me pakistan aint the only one. even in singapore i find so many things i cud never imagine happening. the only reason ppl here listen is because in pakis words.. theres a danda on their heads.
plus! thats why we exist. its up to ppl like us to make those changes... :)
ps: u must have heard the new josh version of mausam! cute song!
Hey
I really like the blog, especially the end:)..
I think abt the music industry, we sometimes all forget that music is not about making what people want...its about you, on how you view the world, your relationship with you, with yout friends, your loved ones, with God etc...sure you share it with the world but thats not what drives you or what should drive you i guess..in the end its not abt how many cds you sold but whether you were able to express you wanted to express..and who gives a flyign F*** whether people liked it or not.. and i think most of the musicians of today have forgotten about that..
But I guess also like anythign else, once you get involved in the industry, its hard to not be part of the system, a sytem which as mentioned is to a great degree corrupt.
What I dont understand is the Pakisanis media insistence on thinking that the public doesnt want anythign new..The pakisani youth is starving for newer, different things..most of the channels feature the same music, the same kind of programming (way too centred on fashion and designers) and although some the people are into it...a lot of people are sick of it as well.
thought Id leave my two cents..
btw i love the end...:)
Peace
Monz
